STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Stevens Point officials are negotiating with the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point on a building lease.
The building that is now Mid-State Technical College on Michigan Avenue belongs to the city, and will be vacated this summer as MSTC moves to their new location on Centerpoint Drive. The city had considered moving city hall to this site, and they almost put part of the Boys and Girls Club in the southern portion of the building. Now, Mayor Andrew Halverson says UW Stevens Point is looking at using the building. “We’re certainly looking to leverage one of the best partnerships we’ve always had, which is the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. They’re certainly looking for new academic opportunities. They’re looking for tremendous new expansion, and a lot of coordination in bringing similar projects to one location.”
Halverson says he cannot give details yet about the terms, or what the university has in mind for the building, but he’s pleased the campus will probably not sit empty. “I will say this. It’s a very exciting endeavor. We’re thrilled to always help one of the strongest economic drivers that we have in this community, which is UWSP.”
The city council discussed the lease negotiations in closed session for about 20 minutes Monday night. No open session votes were taken afterwards.
