Emergency communications an issue in Clark County race for sheriff

DORCHESTER, Wis (WSAU) -- Emergency communications in Clark County is becoming an issue in the primary race for sheriff between Dorchester police chief Gary Leichtman and incumbent sheriff Greg Herrick.

Leichtman says if elected he’d improve portable radio communications. According to the Dorchester police chief, “Right now the biggest problem that we have is the portable radios. And it’s not only dealing with the sheriff’s department, the municipal police departments, but (also) EMS and fire departments. The problem is our portables don’t always ‘get out’ and a lot of the time we’re on portable radios if we’re in houses, or out on foot patrols.”

As of April 1st, Leichtman says, the Sheriff’s Department switched to digital communications even while EMS and fire personnel remained on analog, and “Now we have to switch frequencies to talk to each other.”

WSAU was unable to connect with Sheriff Herrick for his comments on the state of emergency communications in Clark County.
