SCHOFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) -- The man that died in his vehicle after plunging into the Eau Claire River in Schofield was legally drunk at the time of the accident.
Everest Metro Police Department Captain Clay Schulz says 27-year-old Matthew Chaignot of Wausau died as a result of drowning, but an autopsy showed his blood-alcohol concentration was point-16 and his urinalysis results showed a point-236 blood-alcohol concentration. Schulz says both speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
Chaignot died June 17th when his Lincoln Navigator went off the road on Grand Avenue, missed the bridge railing, and plunged into the river. Deputies and divers spent most of the day getting Chaignot and his vehicle out of the water.
