Nekoosa man gets federal probation for sending false tip to the FBI

by

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- A Nekoosa man who falsely told the FBI his friend was going to sell off nuclear secrets will spend the next two years on probation.

Federal prosecutors say 24-year-old Travis Billman sent a message to the FBI In 2012 saying someone he knows was going to steal nuclear secrets from the Navy and sell the information online. The feds say Billman knew the tip was false.

A criminal complaint says that Billman tried to claim he was sleepwalking when he posted the tip, but evidence from his computer showed he tried to mask his IP address when sending the message. Billman plead guilty the the charges in May and sentenced on Tuesday.
