Another write-in sheriff campaign is possible

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- There’s a possibility that an unusual campaign strategy could be seen for the third time in the last 18 years in Portage County. There might be another write-in campaign for Sheriff.

Four men ran for Sheriff in Tuesday’s primary election. Mike Lucas won the primary by 230 votes over Kevin Sorenson, but Sorenson is seriously considering a write in bid this November 4th.

Retiring Sheriff John Charewitz got the job twelve years ago as a write in candidate. Before that, former Sheriff Peter Thrun was defeated in the primary by Stan Potocki in 1996. Potocki defeated the incumbent sheriff twice in a matter of months to become the next sheriff.

In all cases, there was no Republican candidate for sheriff.

Sorenson says he will decide whether or not to run as a write-in after the official canvassing of the votes next week.
