Plover man pleads not guilty by mental defect in beating death of stepfather

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- A Plover man accused in the beating death of his stepfather will be getting a mental competency exam.

32-year-old Andrew Pray plead not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to a count of first degree homicide on Monday in Portage County court.

Pray is accused of striking 77-year-old Christopher Bonnstetter three or four times with the bat as he lay resting on the living room floor on May 26th. His mother was watching television in the room, and was unable to help her husband. When police came to the scene, he gave himself up and responded to police questions with "no comment".

Bonnstetter was removed from life support and died on June 3rd.

Pray will be back in court for a status conference October 6th.
