WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) Wausau's ban on cellphone use while driving is now in effect. The local ordinance was passed earlier this month, and has now been published as of last weekend.
Wausau police say they'll hand out warnings instead of citations for the next few weeks. After that, violators could face a fine of $40 plus court costs.
Wisconsin Rapids and Marshfield already have similar ordinances on the books, and there's continued talk of a state-wide ban in the state legislature. Texting while driving is already illegal in Wisconsin.
Wausau leaders say surrounding communities, including Schofield, Rothschild, Weston, Rib Mountain and Kronenwetter are considering similar laws.
