KRONENWETTER, Wis. (WSAU) -- The new year means new guidelines for handling animal complaints in Marathon County.
Many communities are making adjustments after the Marathon County Board voted to stop funding the stray cat program at the Humane Society of Marathon County.
Kronenwetter police confirm that the county dropped the funding, and the Village Board also chose not to fund it. Without a funding source, the humane society cannot accept the animals. That means the police will only deal with stray dogs and any dog or cat that needs to be quarantined after biting someone.
Some communities, including Wausau and the Village of Weston, are using a new animal control program with mandatory licensing of pets to fund it. Not all communities in the county are interested in this approach.
