Marshfield group opposes "smart meters"

MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) -- Marshfield utility director Bob Trussoni says residents will probably not be able to “opt-out” from the installation of one of the city’s new “smart meters.”

The smart meters are electric and water utility meters that operate on new radio frequency technology, and Trussoni said that even at an extra $25 per month, an “opt-out” wouldn’t be feasible. According to Trussoni, “The primary reason is economically it doesn’t make business sense.”

A group opposing the smart meters are planning a public information meeting to present data that they say indicates the meters are harmful to health and present privacy concerns. That meeting is scheduled for 7 pm next Tuesday, January 21 at the Marshfield Eagles Club.

One of those opposing the new meters is Dorothy Schnitzler who recently filed papers to run for mayor of Marshfield.
