MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The state Republican Party filed a complaint Tuesday against Sunday's newspaper ad by the Trek Bicycle Corporation, calling it an illegal contribution to its former executive Mary Burke.
Trek took out full page ads in the Milwaukee and Madison papers, defending its job record after Republican Governor Scott Walker said Burke -- his main Democratic challenger -- made millions for a company that shipped jobs to China.
Burke's brother, Trek president John Burke, wrote in the ad that Walker's TV spot was "inaccurate," and the company needed to set the record straight.
Both John and Mary Burke have defended Trek Bicycle, saying it employs 1,000 people in Wisconsin and adds $100 million a year to the state's economy.
State GOP director Joe Fadness said the ad violated a state law which prohibits corporations from making direct donations to candidates. He asked the State Government Accountability Board to investigate.
Walker continues to defend his ad, saying Burke has never disputed its accuracy. The governor says Burke is trying to take credit for Trek's success while shying away from the less savory parts of the business.
