Kurt Cobain  may have written "I'd rather be dead than cool," but according to  Courtney Love , her late husband was "desperate" to become a rock star. The singer appears in an upcoming National Geographic series called  The '90s: The Last Great Decade?  where, according to  Rolling Stone , she reveals that her late husband pleaded with record labels to sign  Nirvana . Love says that Cobain "wanted it bad. He wrote to every major [and] minor label, 'We’ll pay. Let us be on your label.'"

More than wanting to release records, Courtney says that Kurt "was desperate to be the biggest rock star in the world. But he made it look like it was thrust upon him."  If true, what Love says stands in stark contrast to the sensitive, retiring image Cobain portrayed to the world. The TV series features a clip of Cobain saying, "I’m too stubborn to allow myself to ever compromise our music or turn us into big rock stars. I just don’t feel like that."

The three-part  The '90s: The Last Great Decade?  miniseries premieres July 6 on the NatGeo channel.
