STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Police say they have a man in custody in connection with an early morning apartment fire in Stevens Point.
Fire crews were called out to the 1900 block of Monroe Street about 1 am on Tuesday for a report of a major fire at an apartment building. When crews arrived, the house was in heavy flames. Cews determined that it was a four unit residence and evacuated two of the residents. A third was located later.
Around 3 am, the fourth resident found police and told them that he had started the fire. He's been identified as 39-year-old Roy Strait. Police sergant Joe Gruber says he's been talking with police and has been cooperative, but could not comment further.
The state fire marshal is on scene, and early reports say Strait may have used gasoline to start the fire. The building is a total loss.
