KNOWLTON, Wis. (WSAU) -- A planned expansion of a Wisconsin Public Service coal ash landfill is coming under scrutiny by a clean energy group.
WPS has asked the Public Service Commission for permission to expand their coal ash landfill in Knowlton in anticipation of greater use. The company has seen good business over the last few years selling off waste ash to businesses as filler for concrete, but new air quality standards have dried up those sales. Now WPS needs a place to put that ash.
The 50 million dollar project is going on hold after Clean Wisconsin called for an environmental impact statement and investigation into the expansion. The groups says that if WPS is now storing their ash, other companies will soon be doing the same.
A decision on the project is expected in the next six months.
