WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) -- Wausau city officials have seen a surge in complaints over unshoveled sidewalks.

A Facebook post says city officials “have received many complaints over the past week about sidewalks and sidewalk ramps being impassable.” They clarify, however, that the city is only responsible for cleaning “approximately 19 miles” of city sidewalks, mostly in the downtown area and around city parks. The remaining sidewalks are the responsibility of the abutting property owners.

"Residents call us about a sidewalk section that is not clear, we inspect the sidewalk, verify non-compliance and then issue a notice requesting them to clear the sidewalk," the post said. "If the sidewalk is not cleared in a designated timeframe the City will clear it and assess the costs back to the property owner."

Wausau officials have looked into 90 complaints of unshoveled sidewalks. So far 68 notices have been issued.

Sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours after snow ends.
