GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) The Green Bay Packers looked to the future with their first round draft pick on Thursday, trading up to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love.
Surprising pundits and fans who thought they would use the 30th pick in the draft to grab immediate help in the offensive line or wide receiver category the Packers sent that pick plus a fourth rounder to the Miami Dolphins for a chance to select Aaron Rodgers apparent successor.
Love struggled last season with 20 touchdowns and 17 interceptions after having a stellar 2018 campaign with 32 touchdowns and just six picks.
GM Brian Gutekunst said he "he can understand people thinking why we would do this at this time". He also said that they are excited to get Love into the Packer program and start preparing him. Gutekunst added "We think alot of him...We think down the road, he certainly has the ability to be a differnce maker at that position, but these things take time, especially at that position."
Love said he's excited to be able to learn from "one of the greats in the game" in Rodgers
This is the first time the Packers have drafted an offensive player in the first round since Derek Sherrod in 2011.
