BARABOO, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) The latest meeting in Baraboo about that infamous prom picture once again had local leaders talking about racism. Neither Baraboo Mayor Mike Palm or Baraboo Schools Superintendent Lori Mueller answered questions from the public about the picture that appears to show up to 60 high school boys giving a Nazi salute.
The mayor last night issued a proclamation against hate. Superintendent Mueller said the school is seeking forgiveness.
The photograph was taken last spring on the afternoon of the prom on the steps of the courthouse. It was posted anonymously on Twitter earlier this month. Who posted it has not been determined. They used the hashtag #GoBaraboo, which is used by the school district to promote positive activities involving the school and students. The picture has since been taken down and the account has been deactivated.
One student in the photograph says students were told by the photographer to wave to their parents. The photographer who took the picture said the image is being “misinterpreted”.
There are at least two more meetings about the picture scheduled over the next couple of weeks. The next meeting is November 29 at Baraboo City Hall.
