Mayors Monday: Mosinee's Brent Jacobson

MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) -- Big things are brewing in the city of Mosinee, where later this week officials will meet for the formal ribbon cutting for a new business that's been over three and a half years in the making.

The Mosinee Brewing Company will open its doors with an invitation-only event on Friday following a ribbon cutting sponsored by the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce. It marks the end of what Mayor Brent Jacobson calls a long process of two steps forward, and at times one step back.

"We've been working very closely with the owners, and now we are almost at the finish line," said Jacobson. "It's a combination of tax increment financing, there was some development incentives given through the city. The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation gave a substantial grant towards the project, and obviously, they have a lot of their own skin in the game through private financing."

Jacobson says it's an example of how state, local, and private entities can come together to bring a project across the finish line.

The project is part of a bigger plan Jacobson has to help bring more energy to downtown Mosinee, which is part of the city's TIF district. In recent years the city has taken down older buildings and added parking in the area. There have also been projects to replace decorative concrete along the sidewalks.

The Mosinee Brewing Company will have a ribbon cutting Friday at 11:30 AM. The brewpub and restaurant will then have a private event that evening from 5 to 9 PM.

Along with the Mosinee Brewing Company, the city will soon see a new Mexican restaurant, which Jacobson says has been built almost simultaneously. "We are hoping that these two projects will start to raise some eyebrows with potential entrapuners or existing business owners who want to do business in our community."

He adds projects like these will go a long way towards changing the perception of Mosinee being a bedroom community to the Wausau area and just a paper mill town.
