MADISON, WI (WSAU) The University of Madison has picked a new leader for its iconic marching band.
Corey Pompey, the Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Nevada-Reno, was announced by the UW School of Music on Tuesday. He'll take over this summer from the legendary Michael Leckrone, who retired as band leader after 50 years.
Pompey is a graduate of the University of Alabama and holds a masters degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He was an assistant band director at Penn State.
“Corey Pompey is the clear choice,” said Susan Cook, director of the School of Music. “He has a deep musicianship along with an enthusiasm and energy on the podium that was infectious; he really connected with the students.”
