MILWAUKEE, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) Milwaukee County prosecutors are clearing two Milwaukee police officers in a deadly shooting from 2017.
The district attorney's office said Tuesday that the officers who shot and killed Antwon Springer in September of 2017 were justified. Police say Springer had a gun in his hand and refused to drop it. Both officers told investigators that they feared for their lives when they shot and killed him near 39th and Congress streets.
A letter from DA John Chisholm says the officers “acted in accord with Wisconsin law” and were justified in using deadly force. The officers, who have not been named, are now cleared to return to active duty.
Police were responding to an outdoor street fight when Springer fired several shots from his porch. He had a prior felony conviction and was not legally allowed to possess a firearm. The gun he used was stolen.
Friends of the victim dispute the findings. They say Springer was legally blind, and may not have known that police were present. An investigation by the Wauwatosa Police Department says the officers properly identified themselves when they ordered Springer to drop his weapon.
