Dave Grohl has shared a statement clarifying the remarks he made at this week's Pollstar Live conference comparing rising star Billie Eilish to the fervor around Nirvana in 1991.

Grohl was quoted by  Variety as saying, "My daughters are obsessed with Billie Eilish. The same thing is happening with her that happened with Nirvana in 1991. People say, 'Is rock dead?' When I look at someone like Billie Eilish, rock and roll is not close to dead!"

Apparently enough people were upset by those seemingly innocuous, if enthusiastic, comments that Grohl felt the need to share the complete transcript of what he said during the conference.

"For a variety of reasons, and out of respect for Billie Eilish, I'd like to share the transcript of what I actually said," Grohl writes.

In the transcript, Grohl tells a story about going to see an Eilish concert with his daughters in Los Angeles, and marvels at her ability to "connect" with the audience.

"The connection that she has with her audience is the same thing that was happening with Nirvana in 1991," he said. "The people in the audience knew every word. And it was like our little secret."

Grohl then went on to say that Eilish's music is "hard to define."

"I don't even know what you call it," Grohl said. "But I would call that rock n' roll. I don't care what sort of instruments you use to do it.

He continued, "When I look at someone like Billie Eilish, I'm like...rock n' roll is not even close to being dead."
