MILWAUKEE, WI  (WHBL) -- Matthew Krueger, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, is warning residents to be accurate and honest when filing tax returns.

Krueger notes that fighting fraud is a year-round activity and when fraud is proven, prison time and fines are imposed.  Some examples of recent tax fraud cases in Wisconsin include understating or hiding income, falsifying deductions, wire fraud, and criminal tax filing enterprises involving foreign nationals that netted hundreds of millions of dollars in fraudulent refund checks.

Krueger said that those convicted spend months to years in federal prison and must pay fines and restitution, and honest taxpayers deserve to know that tax crime will be punished.

This year’s filing deadline falls on Wednesday, April 15th.
