MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network-WSAU) - A state lawmaker beaten by rioters in Madison last week says he's recovering after surgery.

Senator Tim Carpenter, a liberal Democrat from Milwaukee, released a statement that he's confident he will make a full recovery. He didn’t say what exactly what surgery he had.

Rioters attacked Carpenter during protests in Madison last week, while two capitol square statues were torn down. Carpenter says he was assaulted by 8 to 10 people who hit him in the head, neck and ribs because he was taking pictures of the demonstration.

Video from Carpenters phone shows the attack began when two women wearing masks rushed towards him. He is heard saying "don't touch my phone" before the image goes black. Carpenter was assisted by a TV news crew that called for an ambulance.
