WAUPUN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) -- Steven Avery has tested positive for coronavirus, according to one of his former attorneys.
Jerome Buting posted on Twitter that Avery, 57, is confined to his cell, but is said to have had only short-term symptoms.
Wisconsin Department of Corrections records say Avery is at Waupun Correctional Institution. Last week, DOC said 213 people at the Waupun prison had tested positive for the virus.
Buting represented Avery in his 2007 trial for the murder of Teresa Halbach. Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey were convicted of killing the freelance photographer in Manitowoc County.
The case gained worldwide attention with the 2015 release of the series "Making A Murderer," which cast doubt on the process used to convict Avery and Dassey. Avery is currently appealing his conviction. Dassey's appeals have been denied and Gov. Tony Evers has rejected his request for a pardon.
