WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -- The city of Wausau and Zagster have temporarily discontinued their bike share program because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to a press release from Mayor Katie Rosenberg, the company will be withdrawing their bikes and pay stations effective immediately. It's unclear if or when the program will return.

"We know many in the community were excited to have a new way to explore our riverfront and get outdoors for some fresh air, particularly during these trying times, and we regret that these unforeseen circumstances have resulted in the discontinuance of this new program," said Rosenberg through a press release.

Zagster operated several other bike share stations in other Wisconsin cities including Wisconsin Rapids and has pulled out of those communities as well.

The platform allowed users to rent a bike through their mobile app, either by the day or by the hour, then return it either to the same station or a different one.
