Static and Jay both had mid-western roots, but the album title was inspired by Michael Lesy's 1973 book Wisconsin Death Trip. The book contains photographs cataloging dead people of the Black River Falls area in the late 1800's and descriptions of how they lived and died.

The song "Push It" was the first single from the album and is one of Static-X's most popular songs. The band describes the sound as "evil disco."
