Check In Day

Veterans arrive as Camp draws near

They are arriving one by one in the hope that in six weeks time, they will become one.

Tuesday was check-in day for Green Bay Packer veterans who will join the rookies who arrived Monday for the start of the 2019 Training Camp, the first under new Head Coach Matt LaFleur.

Veteran Linebacker Blake Martinez had the most unusual walk into Victor McCormick Hall on the campus of St. Norbert College, cradling his nearly one year old daughter Kinsley in his arm.

When Blake met with reporters outside the dormitory, the media figured the young lady wasn't going to be his training camp roommate.

A few more players filtered in, like defensive end Fadol Brown and new safety Adrian Amos.  Tackle Alex Light checked in while fellow lineman Lucas Patrick and Justin McCray headed out of their dorm and back into their SUV.

The best ride to roll into the dorm parking lot belonged to wide receiver Geronimo Allison.

Allison was just starting to blossom last year when his season was derailed in Washington.   I figured he would really be anxious about getting started again, with full health.

Allison is exactly right about tradition as a Packers Heritage Trail Plaque sits outside McCormick Hall touting the historical connection between the campus and the franchise.

Wednesday will have LaFleur take center stage with his pre-draft press conference followed by the annual Shareholders meeting inside Lambeau Field.

The opening practice of camp is 10:15 AM Thursday morning on Clarke Hinkle Field.

The Packers announced today the practice times for the Houston Texans visit in two weeks.   The teams will work jointly at 10:15 AM both Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6 leading up to the Pre-Season Opener on Thursday, ,August 8.

General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced a veteran contract extension and it was a bit surprising that it went to defensive lineman Dean Lowry.   Due to earn just over two million dollars this season, the final year of his rookie contract, Lowry was signed to a three extension worth a reported 20 million dollars with a six million dollar signing bonus.   Not bad for a 4th round pick from Northwestern in 2016 who has been more steady than flashy.  At least he is dependable having never missed a game because of injury in his first three seasons.

The second first round draft choice this year, safety Darnell Savage, will open camp on the non-football injury list.   Nothing too serious, Savage has his wisdom teeth extracted recently and will need a couple of days before getting on the field.

Undrafted rookie linebacker Greg Roberts, who missed most of the spring work because of injury, has been placed on the physically unable to perform list.   Both players will count against the 90 man roster limit.

That total was reached over the weekend when the Packers signed a free agent wide receiver.  Malik Taylor was undrafted out of Ferris State and spent part of the spring off-season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Time to hit the practice field.
