Aquaman has often been the butt of jokes, but Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa , who plays the undersea superhero in the upcoming  Aquaman movie, sees him more as a hard-rocking metalhead who listens to bands like Metallica and Tool .

"Aquaman's pretty metal," Momoa tells  Metal Hammer . "I know no one thinks that, but Aquaman's metal."

Specifically, he says Metallica's debut album, Kill 'Em All , and the Tool song "Ticks and Leeches" influenced his portrayal of Arthur Curry's alter-ego.

"There's a lot of [ Black ] Sabbath in there too," Momoa adds.

In fact, Momoa says that he often "build[s] [his] characters off of metal songs." His starring role in the 2011 film Conan the Barbarian , for example, was influenced by Pantera .

Aquaman , also starring Amber Heard , Nicole Kidman and Patrick Wilson , opens in theaters December 21.
