Rhinelander man charged with beating a cat

RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU) -- A Rhinelander man has been charged with mistreatment of animials/ causing death after allegedly beating his girlfriend's cat.

Randy Holt was charged with the crime earlier this week. According to Police, his girlfriend found the cat under a bed on October 8th. When interviewed by Police Holt said he thought the animal had an infection, but a vet's exam showed the cat had been badly beaten.

He later told investigators that he had grabbed the cat by the neck and punched it several times, but said he had not intended to kill it.

Holt will return to Oneida County Court on December 3rd for his adjourned initial appearance. In the meantime, he's free on a $2,500 signature bond. Holt cannot own or possess a firearm or have contact with his girlfriend as part of the conditions of his bond.
