MERRILL, WI (WSAU) -- Fire crews in Merrill responded to a house fire early Wednesday morning on East Street.

Officials say the call came in at around 8:30 when residents reported smelling smoke in the home, but couldn't see any fire. Upon entering the building crews found a discoloration in the ceiling, and after knocking it down found burned insulation and roof joists.

Crews conducted a search of other areas and determined that the damage was contained to one room, and they were able to extinguish the flames.

Crews used thermal imaging to determine that a short in a ceiling fan had caused the area to smolder.

Wisconsin Public Service turned off power and gas to the home as a precaution. The Red Cross is assisting the residents with a place to stay until the damage to the room can be repaired.
