EAU CLAIRE, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network-WSAU) -- The Eau Claire City Council may reduce -- by a lot -- fines for marijuana possession in the city. Ordinance amendments proposed by acting City Council president Andrew Werthmann reduce the range of penalties for pot possession from $100 to $500 to as little as $1. The proposal will be brought to the Eau Claire City Council next Monday.

More than 25,00 Eau Claire County residents voted for an advisory referendum this week, in favor of cannabis being legal for adults 21 years and older for medicinal and recreational use.

16 counties and two municipalities had non-binding questions on the ballot, mostly dealing with medical marijuana. Milwaukee and Eau Claire counties also had questions about recreational marijuana. All of the ballot measures passed overwhelmingly.

Pot legalization in Wisconsin would still require a change in state law.
