NEILLSVILLE, WI (WSAU-WAOW) Sunday marked 100 years since the end of World War I as well as Veterans Day. The names of all service members from Wisconsin who've been killed in action were read aloud on Sunday morning.
“You have to be aware of the brotherhood and sisterhood that just rolls over you it’s very special place and a special time,” Steve Maddox a veteran and a volunteer at the Neillsville Highground told WAOW-TV.
“I lost several good friends First Golf War and Second Golf War but their memories have to live on that is why we do this,” said Gary Foster a retired Captain of the United States Navy. Foster was in the United States Navy for more than 27 years. This Veterans Day was his first time visiting the high grounds.
“It’s very solemn it just kind of brings you back to a kind of place of remembrance for these men and women that lost their lives,” said Foster. “We all share a common goal it is to protect and defend so when we are called we answer that call.”
It wasn’t just veterans braving the cold to remember the fallen but for families of veterans as well.
“His service to his country was always a very big thing for him so coming back here always makes me remember that and appreciate those who served,” said Darin Babcock who’s father served in the Vietnam War.
The Neillsville Highground is also accepting winter clothing donations to give out to the homeless until Dec.1.
