MILWAUKEE, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) Milwaukee County's sheriff is investigating how and why three people tried to storm past a gate at the 128th Air Wing at Mitchell airport. It happened Sunday afternoon around 3pm according to a Wisconsin National Guard spokesperson.

A member of the base security force fired a shot after the three subjects tried to rush past. They’ve been arrested and are being held in the county jail. No names have been released. The motive is unclear.

The 128th was holding a ceremony to welcome back about 250 airmen at the time. It’s unclear if they had any ties to the event. The base went into lockdown; normal operations resumed later Sunday.
