Smith to be released following jail term for sex offense

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -- A man convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a child will be released from the Maraton County Jail following the completion of his sentence early this week.

Police say 30-year-old Scott Smith will be released to transitional housing on Tuesday. He served 13 years in jail for a 2005 incident in which he was found guilty do to a no contest plea for sexual assault involving a child. Additionally, charges of child abuse and intimidating a victim were dropped.

In addition to the jail time, Smith will also serve 15 years of probation set to run through 2033.

As with any sex offender that's released at the end of their term, Smith will be subjected to a tight schedule in regards to time out in the community and will be monitored by GPS. He will initially be released to transitional housing located near the Marathon County Jail and must maintain his information on the Wisconsin sex offender database for the rest of his life.
