90s at 9 'Celebrity Skin' Isn't As Perfect As It Appears

Celebrity skin appears perfect on the outside, but there's a lot hiding underneath.

"Celebrity Skin" was the 10th single released by Hole, the first single from their third studio album Celebrity Skin. It was their most successful single reaching #1 on the Alternative Songs chart and #85 on the Hot 100.

Courtney Love wrote this song about the pressures of fame. There was a California rock band called Celebrity Skin in the 90s that were likely the inspiration for the title of the song.

Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins co-wrote the song with Love. Lead guitarist, Eric Erlandson, was apparently uncomfortable with Corgan's involvement. Erlandson wrote the guitar riff while Love and Corgan wrote the lyrics and Corgan also played bass on several tracks on the record.
