MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) -- Central Wisconsin lawmaker John Spiros has been named chairman of the State Assembly's important "Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety" for the 2019-2020 legislative session, and Spiros says he's truly honored.
"Speaker Robin Vos has announced all the chairs for the different committees in the Assembly, and he has made me, once again, chairman of Criminal Justice and Public Safety for the state, in the State Assembly," Sprios said.
Last session, the committee dealt with a wide array of important law enforcement issues including the use of police cameras, drug penalties, child protection laws, and DUI penalties.
Spiros explained that, "We deal a lot with many different types of bills that have to do with crimes; the code, when it comes down to what's a felony, and what's a misdemeanor. And then either enforcing those, or changing those from a law enforcement standpoint."
The Marshfeld Republican says the chairmanship appointment fits well with some of his previous experience in public service. "I've been in law enforcement, and in the Air Force I was in the Security Police. So from that standpoint, that all fits."
This is Spiros' second term as chairman of the Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety. During the 2017-2018 session, that committee passed more bills than any other in the State Assembly.
