MADISON, WI (WSAU) --  Citizen Action Wisconsin has delivered on their promise of challenging a bill restricting early voting.

Attorneys for CAW and other liberal groups filed the papers Monday afternoon in Madison, where a judge determined that the new law is to be put on hold.

The bill limits early voting to two weeks before the day of the election. Walker says the measure is designed to make the election process fair for everyone. Others think it could make voting more difficult for some residents.

A similar measure was struck down by a judge in 2016 according to Robert Kraig of CAW. "If you have a legislature and a governor who decide to ignore, basically, and violate the rule of a judge. If they violate federal law by passing another law that has the same impact, one of the remedies is for the judge simply to block enforcement," he told Wisconsin Radio Network.

Kraig says his group feels they have a strong case on their hands. "Lawyers are very optimistic that this is a very strong case, that the legislature really has not tried to comply with the court decision striking down their previous restrictions."

Governor Walker signed the bill Friday morning in Green Bay as part of a series of bills that many claim were designed to restrict the powers of incoming Governor Tony Evers.
