Last call for railbirds

Rodgers returns for final public practice

The Green Bay Packers are going under wraps from here on out.  They held the final public practice of training camp Monday under perfect summer conditions.

Better yet, Aaron Rodgers returned.

The nearly two hour practice was noticeably crisper too.  Head Coach Matt LaFleur believes the team responded to having their leader back on Ray Nitschke Field.

Rodgers was all set to play last Thursday in Baltimore but was a game day scratch when his back tightened up.   After practice,  Aaron met reporters to explain what happened, how he's feeling  and the great debate over whether he should take any snaps in the final two pre-season games.

A couple of other medical notes from the helmets and shorts workout - Jimmy Graham did not practice after jamming a finger at practice Sunday.   As General Manager Brian Gutekunst said to reporters before practice, no surgery will be needed and "we kind of dodged one there."

Kevin King remains out, as is Josh Jones, Ka'Dar Hollman, Kabian Ento and Ibraheim Campbell in the secondary.    Others held out included Danny Vitale, Jace Sternberger, Oren Burks, Reggie Gilbert and Greg Roberts.

Bryan Bulaga was given a rest day, sort of.  He did individual drills but watched the team periods.  That pushed Billy Turner to right tackle and Elgton Jenkins got some first team reps at left guard.

Trevor Davis had a big practice, showing his versatility.  I joked with after practice he was the total yards from scrimmage leader after running a nifty jet sweep, catching a flare route from motion and then rising above two defenders to pull down a deep ball from Tim Boyle.

The team will hold their first closed practice Tuesday to wrap up the week before departing for Winnipeg to play the Oakland Raiders Thursday night.

I’ve got Green and Gold in my blood having grown up in Titletown and it’s been a treat watching and covering sports from the Packers to the preps for you in Green Bay for Midwest Communications.
As a kid, I chased Packer players for autographs, I’m still chasing ‘em now for quotes on the big play or big game. I’ve had the opportunity to cover Super Bowls, the World Series, Stanley Cup Finals, NBA playoffs and major championship golf over the years but I get just as much enjoyment following the college scene at UWGB or St. Norbert, the Green Bay Gamblers and high school sports.
Our prep coverage was honored as the best of 2007 reinforcing our commitment to give these hard working boys and girls their due.
My work has also been recognized by the Associated Press and Wisconsin Broadcasters Association with several achievement awards.
Outside of the studio, off the field or away from the gym, I’ve had the pleasure of helping dozens of organizations over the years. I’ve served as race announcer and master of ceremonies at the Bellin Run almost from it’s beginning, spoken to various service clubs and hosted charity golf events or team banquets.
My wife Kari and I have raised two active children which has kept us involved in both school and club athletics for nearly 15 years. Chances are you’ll see me on a golf course when the weather’s nice. My roots are deep and that’s why I’m so enthusiastic about this area’s sporting scene, and as I often say, “Watching kids play games helps keep me young!”
Thanks for listening and see you at the game.
