90s at 9 Jesse James Dupree and His Double Entendre

"Down On Me" was almost a Kansas song.

Before Jackyl had been signed to a major label lead singer Jesse James Dupree had become a father and was considering leaving music behind and getting a new job to support his family. It was around that time of uncertainty that he met Steve Walsh of Kansas at a party. They got to talking and Walsh suggested they work on something together.
Dupree got right to work on a new song for Kansas called "Down On Me." Dupree loves the double entendre so it's pretty clear what the song is about. However, he never heard back from Walsh so Dupree decided to record it with Jackyl after they got signed by John Kalodner to Geffen Records. When Dupree played the song for Kalodner he loved it.
One day in the recording studio Walsh popped his head in to say hello. Dupree told Songfacts in an interview about the encounter.

"Steve Walsh walked into the rehearsal room that we were at in Atlanta, just totally coincidentally out of nowhere. He said hello to John Kalodner, and John was going, 'Look, guys, this is the legendary Steve Walsh. Look at this, can you believe it?'

And so Walsh ends up leaving, and Kalodner goes, 'That's pretty cool. Steve Walsh comes in here and says hey.' And I said, 'Yeah. You know that song that you said you liked? The 'Down On Me' song? I wrote that for him and he blew me off.' And Kalodner goes, 'You know what the moral to that story is? You've got a hit, he don't.' And we just took it home from there."

The song ended up being a top 10 hit for Jackyl.

Nikki "Nikilicious" Montgomery

I'm a Central Wisconsin girl born and raised. I grew up in Port Edwards and participated in cheerleading, basketball, volleyball and softball as well as many clubs like National Honor Society, SADD, yearbook and forensics. I was a very busy high school student and still managed to get good enough grades to go to college at UW-Stevens Point where I was just as busy between working 3 jobs including executive staff positions at the campus alternative rock radio station and volunteering at the campus television station.

After graduation I thought I would take my BA in Mass Communications with emphasis in Broadcasting and Journalism and Minor in Political Science and become a big time reporter in some major city. But instead my internship with our news station here at Midwest Communications turned into a part-time job and opened the door to the morning show co-host position at WDEZ. After 9 1/4 years of fun in the mornings I was promoted to Assistant Brand Manager and moved to The Workday Getaway.

I couldn't deny my love for rock anymore! It was time dive head first into the genre I spent my formative years listening to day in and day out. When the opportunity arose for me to become the Brand Manager for Rock 94.7 and host the morning show I couldn't pass it up.

I'm so happy that I stayed in Central Wisconsin I couldn't imagine raising my three daughters anywhere else.
