Sunny Day Real Estate drummer and former Foo Fighters member William Goldsmith has shared a new statement clarifying remarks he made suggesting that Dave Grohl was blocking the release of a new Sunny Day Real Estate album.
In a since deleted Facebook post, Goldsmith wrote that "the greatest Sunny Day Real Estate record ever made remains silenced, abandoned and buried within the murkiest depths of David Grohls [sic] sock drawer." But Foo bassist Nate Mendel , who also plays in SDRE, said in a statement to Pitchfork that there is "no truth" to Goldsmith's claims.
In a new post , Goldsmith writes that Grohl's "sock drawer" is meant to "figuratively represent" the Foo leader's recording studio, Studio 606.
"I was not meaning to claim Dave single handedly prevented the record from being finished," Goldsmith writes. "He just owns the place where it was abandoned."
However, Goldsmith still suggests that Grohl would not approve of Mendel spending time working on a new Sunny record.
"[Grohl] wasn't too thrilled when Nate played with The Fire Theft ," Goldsmith says, referring to a SDRE offshoot band active between 2001 and 2004. "So I doubt he thought about making it so Nate had the time to see [a new Sunny album] through."
Goldsmith also addresses Mendel directly by writing, "The last time I talked to you was when you guys said to be by the phone the next day to have a conference call about finishing LP5. The phone never rang and I haven't heard from you since then which was 2011 if memory serves."
Sunny Day Real Estate's most recent album is 2000's The Rising Tide .
