LA CROSSE, WI (WSAU)  - The UW Board of Regents got an update on a plan that would cut some majors at UW-Stevens Point as the school wrestles with an $8-million budget shortfall. UWSP Chancellor Bernie Patterson and Provost Greg Summers met with the Regents' Education Committee on Thursday in La Crosse.

The plan requires approval from the Regions. No action was taken. A technical timetable for the plan was discussed.

“The Board of Regents appreciates the status report UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Bernie Patterson provided,” said Regent President John Robert Behling.  “We thank him and Provost Greg Summers for their leadership. Chancellor Patterson retains my full confidence and support as he, and many at Stevens Point, continue to seek input on this proposal."

Some former and current faculty members at UWSP have sent a letter to the Board of Regents calling for Patterson and Summers to be removed. The letter claims the school's finances have been mismanaged, and the cutting majors is the wrong approach to the budget shortfall.

University of Wisconsin System President Ray Cross said, "The Point Forward proposal was developed in direct consultation with campus stakeholders, and I commend and support the leadership of Chancellor Patterson and Provost Summers in this collaborative approach,” said President Cross.  “It is now up to the campus as a whole to critically reflect on the proposal in order to provide meaningful feedback on the Point Forward proposal.”
