MADISON, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) - Dane County is preparing to house juveniles in long-term treatment in an upgraded Juvenile Detention Center. Counties around the state are making their own plans for juvenile offenders with the planned shutdown of Lincoln Hills at the end of 2020.

Challenges to the proposal include keeping long-term population separate from those with pending cases, providing recreational space and multipurpose rooms for both types of inmates, and adding outdoor space to the facility on the second floor. Architects have been working on the re-design since May.

The county has set aside $4-million to renovate the juvenile jail. There is some unused space in the current building, which could be modified into separate spaces for male and female juvenile offenders. The biggest challenge is providing separate courtyards and recreational space to keep adults and juveniles in the facilities separate.
