UNDATED (MetroSource) - Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson is urging the incoming governor to raise the gas tax.

Thompson, a four-term GOP governor, called on Democratic Governor-elect Tony Evers Wednesday to work with Republican leaders to push through a significant increase in the gas tax to pay for improved roads. Governor Scott Walker and some Republicans in the legislature were involved in a bitter fight within their party on how to pay for road projects. Walker opposed a gas tax hike, while some legislators were willing to consider the idea.

Thompson said during an appearance at the Milwaukee Press Club, “I like to build things.” He said more revenue is needed to fund larger highway projects.

Thompson said a gas tax increase could also demonstrate that Evers and GOP leaders can work together. He said, “let’s face it, the gas tax hasn’t been raised in a long time.”

Thompson also said doing away with indexing -- where the gas tax is automatically raised based on inflation -- was a mistake. Indexing was eliminated during Scott Walker’s first term.
