UNDATED (Wisconsin Radio Network) - This year’s gun deer season is the safest on record for Wisconsin. That’s despite three hunters getting shot. Jon King with the Department of Natural Resources said those three hunters were treated for non-fatal gunshots wounds, but there have been no fatalities.

King said six hunters were shot last year. None of them died. The last time a Wisconsin hunter died in the field was 2015.

The number of deer harvested, about 211,000, is an increase of 7-percent from a year ago. Hunters took 104,000 bucks and 107,000 antlerless deer.

The DNR says the southern farmland region saw the biggest increase in the state, up 17-percent from last fall. The number of deer taken in the central forest region was down 9-percent.

Marathon County had the most deer registered of any county in the state at 7,642.

The numnber of deer licenses sold was down, from 582,000 to 547,000.
