WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU-WAOW) - Things are looking brighter for the 76 dogs seized from two Wood County homes late last month Officials at South Wood County Humane Society said the dogs, which were living in terrible conditions in Babcock, have returned to good health and soon will be up for adoption starting next week.

When the dogs were rescued, most were covered in fleas, intestinal parasites and one dog tested positive for the Parvo virus, officials said.

Beth Peabody, director for animal care at the humane society, told WAOW-TV that the moment the news spread about the dogs, the community responded with donations, including blankets, food and treats for the dogs.

“We are happy to announce that all of them have been cleared by our veterinarian and we will hopefully put them up for adoption on Monday,” Peabody said.

However, caring for the dogs was costly. “We are estimating with those 76 dogs and with what we did it will cost about $300 to $400 for each dog,” said Brett Thompson, executive director of the South Wood County Humane Society.

Thompson said little community events like that help because the humane society is mostly run by donations.

Peabody said she expects most of the dogs to be adopted by the end of next week.
