MILWAUKEE, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) - Milwaukee DA John Chisholm is calling for a statewide review of Catholic Church sex abuse cases. A similar review in Pennsylvania last year implicated hundreds of priests in multiple dioceses and suggested that there were more than 1,000 victims.
Chisholm says he would new Attorney General Josh Kaul to investigate cases of sexual abuse of minors over the last 50 years. He says the new AG should coordinate with county prosecutors across the state. Chisholm also says the state’s bishops should voluntarily open their files.
Chisholm also says the state has other options to investigate abuse claims, including empaneling a grand jury or opening a John Doe investigation. He is also calling on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to unseal its files on the Milwaukee archdiocese bankruptcy. He says the names of more than 100 abuse victims could be shielded, while their abusers would exposed.
AG Kaul says he won’t comment on a request to investigate from the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests. SNAP leader Peter Isely described a chances for a statewide investigation as “promising”.
