90s at 9 Grunge Super Group Surprise

Three big names in grunge join forces on "River of Deceit."

In 1995 the band Mad Season released their first single "River of Deceit." The song reached #2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and is the band's most well known song. Their second single didn't do nearly as well peaking at #20 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
The band Mad Season was made up of some pretty big names in grunge so it's kind of surprising the album, Above,  didn't do better. This was the only album they ever put out, it featured Layne Staley on vocals from Alice in Chains, Mike McCready on guitar from Pearl Jam and Martin Barrett from The Screaming Trees on drums. They first played together at a show where the audience had no idea who the band was and expected a bunch of newcomers.
The song "River of Deceit" was written by Staley about his spiritual mission through music and his drug addiction that eventually lead to his death. It seems to refer to the river Styx in Hell and how he is unable to compromise his true self to avoid being pulled down by it.
