STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -- There's still time to turn in your nominating papers if you plan on running in the 2019 spring elections, but don't wait too long.
Stevens Point City Clerk Paul Piotrowski says the deadline to turn all nominating papers in is 5 PM on Wednesday, January 2nd. That goes for all positions that will be up for election this April in his city, including all odd-numbered Alder districts.
Piotrowski says there is at least one candidate in every city race including his position and the Mayor's office. Incumbent Mike Wiza has filed for re-election, and Piotrowski says he has filed for the Clerk's position which he was appointed to last fall.
In a couple of Alder districts, there are three candidates. Piotrowski says if a fourth candidate files at the last minute an automatic primary would be triggered for February. If the race remains at three, it would be up to the City Council to declare a primary or advance all three to the general election.
Anyone wishing to get their name on the ballot must file three items- a declaration of candidacy, campaign finance form, and nominating petition with an appropriate number of signatures on it. For an Alder seat, Piotrowski says that's between 20-14, a city-wide position requires up to 400 signatures.
Piotrowski adds that his office is there to help with the paperwork every step of the way. "We issue them an information packet explaining what they need to do, the campaign finance requirements, and we will issue them a map of the district that they are going to be running in so they know where they have to get signatures from."
After Wednesday's deadline, Piotrowski's office will verify the petitions and complete the list of candidates for each race.
