MADISON, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) The latest climate change plan in Madison would fine businesses who leave their doors open and air conditioning on during the summer months.

City leaders last week started began debating the plan to issue tickets to businesses who leave their windows or doors open for too long while running the air conditioning. Fines would start at $50 dollars, but would rise to $250 for repeat violations. There would be exceptions for times when people are entering or exiting a business or when merchandise is being delivered to a store.

The proposal will be introduced at Tuesday’s city council meeting, and will be referred to multiple city committees for consideration.

The draft ordinance says Madison is feeling the impact of global warming, making reference to record flooding in 2018.
