MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin's new Attorney General announced he is ready to get to work, moments after taking his oath of office in Madison Monday.
Democrat Josh Kaul said he is not going to let legislation that was passed during the lame duck session which put limits on his power, stop him from doing what is best for Wisconsin, and called for everyone to come together.
He was critical of Wisconsin lawmakers.
"In deciding how to confront the challenges we face, there will be significant real differences of opinion. Let's be sure to remember that adherence to the principles of our democracy, must take precedence over the policy agendas of the day."
The lame-duck measures eliminated the attorney general's solicitor general office, allows lawmakers to intervene in lawsuits and requires Kaul to seek approval from lawmakers before reaching settlements.
Kaul emphasized the importance of school safety, but not just by funding schools to upgrade their security.
"More than 4 million students went through lockdowns, and while I applaud the passage of funding for school safety last year, I am also calling for more action."
He says that means making attempts to stop the thoughts of school shootings from occurring.
"I am calling for a "Red Flag Law" that will allow law enforcement or family members to go to a judge, and ensure that somebody that is a threat to themselves or others is temporally disarmed."
Kaul also called for more funding for mental health professionals in schools.
He also promised to work with all lawmakers to keep up with testing sexual assault kits.
"We can work together on these issues no matter our party and no matter which part of the state we come from."
