GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) -- Green Bay-based Shopko Stores appears to be heading for bankruptcy.
USA Today Wisconsin is reporting that a prescription drug supplier is calling for the stores to stop distributing their products because Shopko owes them more than $67 million dollars. McKesson Corporation says they haven't been paid for the products since early November and was in court this week to ask a judge to block the sales of their drugs at all Shopko-owned pharmacies.
During that court appearance, an attorney for McKesson Corp. said it is likely that Shopko could file for bankruptcy protection as soon as January 15th. Representatives from Shopko have not commented.
Attorneys for Shopko argued that by closing stores or pharmacies they would make it difficult for customers to get their medication, some of which could be life-saving. A judge then blocked the restraining order.
Shopko has previously announced plans to sell some of its pharmacies to Kroger, which owns brands such as Pick-N-Save and Copps in Wisconsin through its Roundy's division.
